first July harvest
When I got home on Saturday night Larch filled me in on the June harvest and the crew that was living here. People from Vermont, his son and Daughter, a seaweed customer’s daughter looking for an adventure, a trapeze artist- lots of interesting sounding people! Now I am here and it is quIet and peaceful. We have already had two visitors. Leigh and her friend Ruthie- they have a farm in Brookesville called David’s Folley. The girls left the boys back on the farm today to learn the surf on an Alaria bed with us.
No pictures from today’s harvest but I’ll go out and photograph the alaria hanging, and hopefully catch the sunrise for you tomorrow morning. We harvested about 10 bushels today. It was fun watching Leigh in one of the punts as she watched and road the surf, patiently waiting for the right moment to scoot in on the ledge from which we harvested. We scrambled around on the ledge for a few hours- it’s a great feeling to slip around on the rocks protected by the thick wet suits. You have to be a bit daring and not mind the water washing up around you- you just hold tight to the seaweed as the waves toss you around.
Yesterday I had my first rowing lesson. Larch was in one punt and I was in the other. He tied the punts together and we faced each other. First he rowed out towards the bay and I rowed with him trying to stay balanced. Then once we got to the mouth of the bay I rowed backwards into the cove pulling the boat in as he rowed in the opposite direction creating resistance- it was a playful lesson. Really woke up my muscles! Next lesson I’ll practice turning the boat around- I’m starting to get it. Oh and I learned to tie a sheet knot.
