Time to Breathe

I am back in Maine for a few weeks- I feel like I’m “on tour” with the seaweeds! While I was in southern and western New England I visited RI where I talked up how nutritious sea veggies are and got to taste salads made with local veggies, locally baked breads and cheeses and local beers and wines at a local foods fest. Chef Matt from Chez Pascal used my dulse and my soup mix in the yummiest squid dish I’ve ever tasted. He simmered the squid in red wine until it was nice and tender and then he added my soup mix and leeks and cooked the broth down- he topped the tender squid with finely spiraled cucumbers and dulse vinaigrette. I need to make friends with more chefs! I gave out lots of business cards I hope people are checking out the site.

I hope to get the seaweeds up for sale on the site really soon!

From RI I traveled to Western Mass for the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association’s summer conference. I attended workshops on growing mushrooms and on Agro-forestry. I didn’t think I knew what agro-forestry was until I slipped into the lecture and marveled at photographs of familiar friends from the Appalachian forest. When I was at Warren Wilson I came really close to starting a project growing woodland medicinals, like goldenseal, but I got side tracked. Still a dream! I sold lots of seaweed at the NOFA conference on Saturday- it was encouraging selling at a market where people were very familiar with the produckt and had no problem buying multiple bags.

Don’t you think a shitake and seaweed soup mix would be fun!?! I have a contact in Western Mass that is already growing mushrooms and I hope to visit and learn more asap!

I am resting now in Steuben. Packaging seaweed and keeping Larch’s business going. I visited John and Irene at Zocolo yesterday and we played music in Winter Harbor. I got to sing a few songs for the crowd- about 15 people. I sang Red River Valley and I Shall Be Released and we all played some waltzes and jigs and enjoyed the journey that Irene, Jon and Carl took us on to foreign lands- Turkey, Italy, Mexico… It’s so nice to play music for people.

Check back on the site in the next week for new seaweed specimen shots.

    Hi Kacie,

It was a pleasure meeting you at the Common Grounds Fair. You are so passionate about life and good nutritious food. It was great learn about harvesting sea veggies and get to see your beautiful picutres. We
baught your delicious harvested Dulce and Wakame. I had to dicipline myslef not to eat it ALL on the way back home, as that’s the way I love to eat it, right out of the bag. My husband and I are farmers, raw foodies and nutritional microscopist’s and teach about the health benefits of living foods every day to our students and the community. We are hoping to transition to Maine in the next year or two, hopefully sooner. WE LOVE MAINE!

Please add me to your e-mail blasts if you have that set up. Charley and I have always bought MaineCoast Sea Veggies, but would LOVE it if you were to ever sell/ship on line to support your endeavors. We are working on a site http://www.livingfoodsgang.com, which is under construction, but will hopefully be worth visiting in the next two months…and if you have time to visit it, wondering about the possibilities of adding your link.

    Gratefully,
    Tara & Charley
